The classic chive is a perennial and is sown in clumps or rows. As the plant can last for several years, it is a good idea to harvest with caution the first year so that the plant can grow and then give a good harvest for several years. One tip is to plant extra seeds the first year and then divide the plant gradually.
A bonus of chives is that they have beautiful edible flowers. Let some of the plants bloom and use them as a seasoning or decoration. The flowers have a milder onion flavor and add a nice pop of color to your summer salad.
