It is called Alida, Åhus or Åhushavanna – the tobacco that “Mother” Alida Olsson in Yngsjö is said to have saved seeds from when the last Swedish tobacco plantation was closed down in 1964. Hardy and fast-growing, it is perfect for our latitudes. Beautiful with delicate small flowers and worth growing even if it is not going to end up in a pipe or under the lip. Germinate superficially before sowing in, for example, a greenhouse – do not cover the seed. Plant out in May/June after hardening off.
